Top 10 Tools for Meditation

While meditation can be done without any tools, many people find that using certain tools can enhance their experience and help achieve a deeper state of relaxation and concentration. From guided meditation apps to comfortable meditation cushions, these tools can make your overall meditation experience more enjoyable.

Here are 10 meditation tools that can assist in your practice.

1. Your Breath

Often overlooked but the most important aspect of meditation is your breath. By simply paying attention to the air moving and in and out of your nose or your belly, it can help you focus and relax more deeply. Remember, the key to using your breath as a meditation tool is to simply observe it without judgment or attachment to any thoughts or feelings that arise.

2. Incense or Essential Oil

Burning incense can help to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere during meditation. Scents such as lavender are known for their calming properties. Also, essential oils can be used to enhance the meditation experience. Scents like peppermint can be diffused to promote focus.

3. Cushion

To assist in maintaining good posture during seated meditation, some people prefer to use a cushion such as a Zafu. It elevates the hips and allows the spine to be in a natural upright position, which promotes better breathing and reduces strain on the back and knees. These are especially helpful for those with limited flexibility or mobility.

4. Candle

A candle can be used to create a peaceful, calming atmosphere during meditation. It can also serve as a focal point during your meditation practice.

5. Singing Bowl/Chime/Bell

Crystal singing bowls and Tibetan singing bowls produce a soothing melodic sound that can help induce a state of relaxation. They can be used to mark the beginning and end of a meditation session. Bells or chimes can be used the same way.

6. Mala

Mala is a string of beads used for counting or keeping track during meditation. They can also be used as a physical reminder to stay focused during the practice. Mala are typically 108 beads used for counting breaths, mantras or affirmations during meditation. Some people wear the Mala around their neck or wrists outside of the meditation session as a reminder of the intention and commitment to their meditation practice.

7. Eye Pillow

An eye pillow filled with flax seeds, lavender or other dried herbs can be used during meditation to help you relax and focus your mind. By feeling the gentle weight of the eye pillow on your eyes, it helps to relax your facial muscles.

8. Music

Many people find that instrumental music helps to create a peaceful and relaxing environment for meditation. It can help to block out distracting noises, allowing you to become fully immersed in the moment and focus on your breath or mantra. Nature sounds and ambient music are popular choices for meditation, but ultimately the best choice will depend on your personal taste and preferences.

9. Journal

A journal can be used to track your meditation progress. It’s also a good tool for reflection and self-discovery. You can write down insights or inspirations that arise during meditation.

10. Meditation Apps

With modern technology, there’s no shortage of meditation apps out there to help you with meditation. Meditation apps like Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer offer a wide range of guided meditations that can help beginners to get started with their meditation practice. These apps also have built in features such as progress tracking and daily reminders.

Incorporating meditation into your daily routine can have numerous benefits for your health. And, using the right tools can help to enhance your overall meditation experience. Whether you prefer being guided by your own breath or an app, there is a wide range of options out there to suit your individual tastes and needs. Experiment with any or all of them to find what works best for you.
